The lively notes of the fife and hollow sound of a drum were eager sought by the social élite to add flavour to their soirée. Playing for dance parties was an extra source of income for the drummer or fifer and, of course, the drum major.
Whilst on Home Service, the Drums of the guarding regiment at St. James Palace were frequently called upon the entertain the Duke of York and his guests. Indeed, the elaborately laced coats and martial music of the Drums was a much-wanted spectacle.
In the remote garrisons of Canada, the music of the fife and drum did wonders to break the monotony of garrison life. Officers would frequently organize parties with the local population, and the music would of course be provided by the regiment's drums.
